CHICAGO – Patricia (Patty) M.Y. Wong, county librarian/chief archivist of the Yolo County Library (Calif.) is the 2012 recipient of the American Library Association Equality Award. The annual award, $1000 and a framed citation of achievement donated by Scarecrow Press, a member of the Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, is given to an individual or group for outstanding contributions toward promoting equality in the library profession.

From the beginning of her career Patty Wong has been a consistent and diligent champion of library services to the whole community. Growing up in a culturally and ethnically diverse community herself, she has made it her mission to reach out to underserved groups in order to put libraries at the heart of the community.

She is known for her work for the California State Library on initiatives for service to diverse communities, including the writing of several seminal publications. She was APALApresident (1999) and has been an active and member and advocate of the five ethnic caucus associations since 1990.

The Equality Award jury noted Patty Wong’s outstanding efforts in teaching and mentoring students. As an instructor at the School of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University since 2006, a participant on many Spectrum scholarship committees and a mentor for many students from diverse backgrounds, she reaffirms on a daily basis her commitment to making libraries more diverse and a core part of the communities they serve.

In 2006, she received the JCLC Advocacy Award from APALA for being a “steadfast advocate for communities of color”. In recognition of her strong commitment to the communities with which she has worked, she was selected as Yolo County’s Woman of the Year in 2009 by California’s 5th Senate District. She has been active within the American Library Association for many years serving in a leadership role on numerous ALACommittees including elected roles as a member of ALA Council and ALA Executive Board.

In the words of Roberto C. Delgadillo, humanities and social sciences librarian, University of California, Davis, “She is the consummate library activist, and her career exemplifies someone who is a tireless proponent of library services that reach everyone. Patty’s passion and commitment to the profession only strengthens the role librarians and libraries can play in the lives of individuals as well as in a given community.”

The award will be presented at the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, Calif. in June.

Members of the 2012 Equality Award Jury are Eva M. Davis, Canton (Mich.) Public Library; Samantha Hines, College of Technology Library, Missoula, Mont.; Diane Hughes, Morrisville Free Library Association, Morrisville, Pa.; Alanna Aiko Moore, University of California – San Diego Library, San Diego; and Chair John A. Moorman, Williamsburg Regional Library, Williamsburg, Va.

From ALA:

CHICAGO – Liladhar R. Pendse, librarian for Slavic and Eastern European and Eurasian studies (Central Asian studies) at Princeton University, has been selected to receive the 2012 Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Western European Studies Section (WESS) De Gruyter European Librarianship Study Grant.

Sponsored by the Walter de Gruyter Foundation for Scholarship and Research, the grant provides $3,000 to support a trip to Europe. The primary criterion for awarding the grant is the significance and utility of the proposed project as a contribution to the study of the acquisition, organization or use of library resources from or relating to Europe.

Pendse will receive the award check during the WESS General Membership Meeting at the 2012 ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim.

“A comprehensive bibliography and subject analysis of Indo-Portuguese periodicals held by the National Library of Portugal and other libraries in Lisbon will open up an as of yet untapped trove of resources on the Portuguese colonies of India,” said award committee chair Brian Vetruba of Washington University in St. Louis. “Pendse’s finished project will be an asset not only to West European and South Asian Studies scholars but also those examining questions of national identity and intercultural exchanges.”

Pendse’s research will result in a peer reviewed research paper and further the development of an online searchable version of the bibliography of Indo-Portuguese periodicals.

Pendse received his M.L.I.S. (2006), M.A. in Latin American studies (2006) and B.A. in history with Arabic and Islamic Studies minor (2004) from the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA).

##

ACRL is a division of the American Library Association (ALA), representing more than 12,000 academic and research librarians and interested individuals. ACRL is the only individual membership organization in North America that develops programs, products and services to meet the unique needs of academic and research librarians. Its initiatives enable the higher education community to understand the role that academic libraries play in the teaching, learning and research environments.

Happy Year of the Dragon! I hope you all had a great time this past MidWinter conference despite your busy schedule. With social media, through photos and posts, we were all able to vicariously enjoy and capture one’s conference experience. It was great to see many new faces at our APALA events as well as reconnect with many APALA friends.

Thus far, my year as president has been busy yet extremely rewarding. Thanks to the leadership of our Executive Board and Committee Chairs, we have accomplished much during these past six months:

Three successful socials at ALA MidWinter: A tour of the Crow Collection of Asian Art, social dinner at Zenna Thai and Japanese Restaurant and APALA/AILA participation of the 5K.

Endorsement of Resolution Opposing Restriction of Access to Materials and Open Inquiry in Ethnic and Cultural Studies Programs in Arizona.

Tina Chan was named APALA’s Emerging Leader.

Announcement of Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature (APAAL) at MidWinter.

Family Literacy Focus Task Force, a collaboration between APALA and American Indian Library Association (AILA) received a $2500 from Toyota for their ongoing project.

Approval to award four $500 Joint Conference for Librarians of Color (JCLC) Scholarships to APALA members.

Kick off of t-shirt campaign.

Networking and soliciting ongoing donations.

Continual succession planning within committees.

Constitution and Bylaws update.

Promotion of APALA through ALA.

APALA representation at ALA national level: Working Group on Diversity and LIS Education, Equitable Access to Electronic Content (EQIACC).

Ongoing support of JCLC with printing donation of publicity postcards and raffle baskets.

Increase in membership by 24%.

Matched 9 protégé with mentors.

Transition between incoming (Buenaventura “Ven” Basco) and outgoing (Gary Colmenar) Executive Director.

Continual collaboration and partnerships with our ethnic caucuses: AILA, BCALA, CALA, REFORMA..

None of the above would have been accomplished without the dedication of our Board and Committee Chairs.

Finally, I would like to thank Gary Colmenar, our outgoing Executive Director (2006-2012) for his years of service with APALA. Gary’s knowledge of APALA and ALA have been invaluable for those of us who serve on the board during these years. During these past six months, Gary has been working with our incoming Executive Director Buenaventura “Ven” Basco on transitioning roles. Gary is not only a colleague but a great friend and support to us all. Thank you Gary!

Have a great year!

Best,

-Sandy
2011-2012 APALA President

As an early career librarian, it is important for me to learn leadership and problem solving skills, network with my peers, and be involved with ALA. ALA’s Emerging Leaders program does just this. I am honored to be selected to the 2012 Class of Emerging Leaders and to be APALA’s Emerging Leaders sponsorship recipient.

At ALA Midwinter in Dallas, the Emerging Leaders received a daylong leadership orientation and training, as well as an opportunity to meet fellow Emerging Leaders. My team members include a library assistant at a community college in Florida, a director of a public library in Arkansas, and I (a reference and instruction librarian at a college in upstate New York). We are a small group compared to others who are in groups of four or five. Our project is working with REFORMA’s Noche de Cuentos, a family literacy focus program. The purpose of the project is to create a website to serve as a national clearinghouse for Latino programming resources that will help librarians plan Latino heritage programs for their communities.

After getting to know my team members, we received training on project management and intentional leadership. Some of the things we learned about intentional leadership are that intentional leaders are self-aware and socially aware and that leaders influence others and are influenced by others. We then worked on a team exercise, where we were given straws, pins, and thumbtacks. Our assignment was to connect the straws using the pins and thumbtacks, with the goal of building the straws as high as possible, standing for 30 seconds. You can imagine the problem solving, creativity, and humor involved. A picture of our finished product is shown. My team members and I worked great together as we were open to suggestions and were flexible. It was a great exercise to demonstrate how we will work together on our Emerging Leaders project.

We also worked on a personal learning plan and a team communication plan. It was beneficial to outline these in person and in writing before we begin our project. Additionally, we learned about ALA’s organizational entities as some of ALA’s leaders spoke about the work of their units and how their work fits in the overall ALA structure.

Later that evening, ALA President Molly Raphael and President-elect Maureen Sullivan held a reception to celebrate Emerging Leaders and ALA leadership. I had the opportunity to meet more Emerging Leaders, ALA leaders, and other library professionals. I was in the company of good people and good food.

I had a wonderful time at the Emerging Leaders training. I feel invigorated after meeting everyone, and I look forward to beginning my project with my team members. I am extremely thankful to APALA for sponsoring me. It is an honor to be the Emerging Leaders sponsorship recipient.
