The Ocean County Library, recipient of the 2007 National Medal for Museum and Library Services awarded by the IMLS, serves over 550,000 residents from the 33 municipalities that comprise Ocean County. Definition

Under the supervision of the branch manager, this position is responsible for developing library relationships with, and targeting library services to the community at large. This person will connect underserved individuals and groups with the power of books, literacy, media, information, and technology. She/he will promote the library as an inclusive public space. This person will lead outreach initiatives and will work closely with other branch staff on outreach efforts. Intangibles: Creativity, initiative, excellent communication skills, and an energetic and outgoing personality. This job requires more evening and weekend hours than in a standard schedule due to needs and opportunities within the community.

Duties

Outreach leader:

1. Implements outreach plan for Lakewood Branch
2. Plans short and long term outreach initiatives
3. Does public speaking; represents the library at events, meetings, and conferences
4. Promotes the library through participation in community events
5. Establishes processes for connecting with and maintaining contact with local groups and organizations
6. Reaches out and develops relationships with community contacts
7. Runs focus groups and other data gathering techniques o identify community needs and wants
8. Takes library activities into the community (e.g. library card registration, booktalks, discussion groups)
9. Shares information and contacts

Outreach guide

1. Coordinates with branch staff to connect new customers/groups with library resources and services (e.g. internet, electronic databases, book discussion groups)
2. Works with other outreach librarians, system departments and system staff to provide a constant Ocean County Library message


Event Coordinator: Plans and coordinates collaborative community events at the library (celebrations, fairs, and large programs)

Assists the branch manager in branch operations as required.


Requirements:
A Master's degree in Library or Information Science in a library program from a library school accredited by the State Board of Education and two (2) years of librarian experience.
Appointees will be required to possess a valid license as a Professional Librarian issued by the Bureau of Teacher Certification, Thomas Edison State College.
