Instructional Support & Information Services Specialist

Spring Hill College (SHC), a Jesuit liberal arts college in Mobile, Alabama, seeks an Instructional Support & Information Services Specialist to oversee the software support and training efforts of the department; oversee the Burke Memorial Library web site; and work collaboratively with institutional colleagues to provide opportunities in support of teaching and learning.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

COLLABORATION - Researches trends and uses professional knowledge to analyze the environment in order to initiate the development and implementation of programs of software support and training (both in-person and on-line) for students, faculty, and staff; works collaboratively with the Director, colleagues and the Director of Faculty Development to create and articulate a vision of the information resources and services necessary to support teaching and learning in a rapidly changing environment; working collaboratively with the Director, librarians, the Director of Faculty Development, and the Library & Information Technology Faculty Committee, researches, plans, and implements institutional information literacy enhancement projects; participates in the preparation of assessments to include evaluation of services and how best to meet student and faculty instructional and research needs; recommends action based on these assessments to the Director; and collaborates in the development and implementation of library and information resource policies and procedures, using analytical tools and independent judgment.

TECHNOLOGY - Designs, oversees, coordinates content for, and maintains the Burke Memorial Library (Library & Information Resource Services departmental) web site and all associated pages, and uses appropriate tools to do so (including programming in PHP or ASP, the use of PLONE, or the use of multimedia enhancements, such as Flash); works with the Instructional Design Specialist to make decisions about how to coordinate activities and learning opportunities; and works with faculty to design and present training seminars tailored to the needs of a specific course.

MANAGEMENT - Supervises and provides direction to the Helpdesk Applications Support Specialist; and trains and supervises student technology/information assistants (SIAs) in the College SIA program.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS - Typical qualifications would be a Master’s or Bachelor's degree in Information Studies or Library Science, Computer Information Systems, Management Information Systems, or Computer Science from an accredited college or university; other areas of study may be considered if augmented by extensive knowledge and experience with computers. Three or more years of experience supporting users of personal computers. Experience in academic institution desirable. This position requires self-direction, the ability to identify trends in technology support, the ability to make recommendations for policies impacting the use of applications and software in support of all academic classrooms, and the ability to work proactively toward providing support direction for campus users.
