RESEARCH LIBRARIAN FOR BUSINESS

 

The University of California, Irvine Libraries seek a creative, knowledgeable, and user-centered Research Librarian for Business to plan and deliver innovative reference and instruction services, and to develop and manage electronic and print collections in Business and Management.

The Research Librarian for Business will provide liaison and outreach to faculty and students of the Paul Merage School of Business. The Paul Merage School of Business has been ranked among the top 50 business schools nationally by the Wall Street Journal, Business Week and U.S. News and World Report. The School's program is known for its focus and integration of Information Technology for Management in its curriculum. This focus emphasizes the need for a thorough understanding of how to use information and technology resources. The Paul Merage School of Business is ranked within the top 10 in Information Technology by the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times. The School offers a full-time Ph.D. program, and four MBA programs (Full-time MBA, Executive MBA, Fully Employed MBA, and Health Care Executive MBA). Beginning Fall 2008 the School will also offer a BA in Business Administration and a BS in Information Management.

The successful candidate for this position will be a member of the Langson Library Reference Department, reporting to the Head of Reference with a secondary reporting line to the Head of Collection Development.

Duties and Responsibilities

In the area of collection development, the Research Librarian for Business will be responsible for the selection, assessment, and management of collections and resources in business and management including reference resources. The Research Librarian will serve as liaison to the faculty and students in The Paul Merage School of Business to ensure that their information needs are being met and to promote the Libraries’ services and resources. The Research Librarian will be responsible for monitoring budgets and making collections decisions that support the teaching and research needs on campus. The incumbent will keep abreast of new publications and electronic resources in business and management and will develop and update subject web pages in support of curriculum and research in The Paul Merage School of Business.

The UCI Libraries fund the business electronic resources available to the campus, and The Paul Merage School of Business funds electronic resources available in its "ELibrary" (restricted to The Paul Merage School of Business students, faculty, and staff). The Research Librarian for Business will work with both the UCI Libraries and The Merage School of Business to ensure that teaching and research needs are being met by the joint collections.

In the area of reference, the Research Librarian for Business will provide specialized business and general reference services at the Langson Library Reference Desk, supporting information needs in business, social sciences, government publications, humanities, education, and the arts. The Research Librarian for Business will provide approximately ten hours of reference service weekly, including responding to in-person, telephone, and electronic inquiries. The candidate will provide specialized individual research consultations and also maintain sufficient knowledge to provide effective general reference assistance. Occasional weekend and evening shifts are required.

In the area of instruction, the Research Librarian for Business will provide and promote subject-based instruction ranging from general orientations and overviews of electronic resources in business to customized presentations for specific course assignments. The candidate will also participate in the Libraries' information literacy initiatives and general education programs to assist campus and community users in improving their critical thinking, information seeking, and research skills.
Qualifications

Required:

Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or an equivalent combination of relevant advanced degree and library experience.
Substantial knowledge of business and financial information resources, in both print and electronic formats.
Ability to provide effective instruction in the use of electronic and print resources in business.
Strong interest in building and managing collections in business, both print and electronic.
Commitment to user-centered library services.
Strong interest in library information technology.
Strong interest in working with students and faculty.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to work effectively in a team and in a dynamically changing environment.
Ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies.
Ability to meet the University of California criteria for advancement and promotion of Librarians.
Preferred:

Significant experience in teaching information literacy skills in business and management.
Experience assessing, evaluating, and negotiating digital resources in business.
Skill in developing, organizing, and maintaining web-based information resources.
Educational background in business or management.
Experience in performing reference, instruction and/or collection development in business-related subjects in an academic or research library.
Consideration will be given to applicants with a wide range of years of experience, including qualified early career librarians.

The Langson Library Reference Department

As the primary research and information center of the Langson Library, the department supports research and teaching in the Arts, Education, Humanities, Social Sciences and Business and Management. The department provides reference services including research consultation, online searching, tours, and a wide range of instructional programs and workshops. The Reference Collection consists of key print resources along with a growing collection of media, data and electronic resources in the Multimedia Resources Center, which is also located in the department. A large Technology Enhanced Classroom and a robust wireless network throughout the Libraries provide excellent facilities for teaching. The department operates in a team-based environment and the staff consists of 10 librarians; 5 FTE library assistants and a computer resource specialist.

The Libraries

The UCI Libraries are committed to innovation and excellence and are in a major period of growth and change. The Libraries consist of the Langson Library, the Science Library, the Library Gateway Study Center, and the Grunigen Medical Library. The Langson Library primarily serves the Schools of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, Social Ecology, Business, the Department of Education, and Interdisciplinary Studies. The Science Library primarily serves the College of Health Sciences (including the School of Medicine) and the Schools of Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and Information and Computer Sciences. The Grunigen Medical Library serves the clinical needs of the Health Sciences at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center, located in Orange, 12 miles from the main campus.

The UCI Libraries have a staff of 273 FTE and an organizational structure that includes the use of teams in conjunction with departments. The library collection consists of over 2.7 million volumes, over 48,000 current serial titles, and an aggressively expanding electronic resources collection. The UCI Libraries are a member of the: Association of Research Libraries (ARL), California Digital Library (CDL), Coalition of Networked Information (CNI), Center for Research Libraries (CRL), Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and Scholarly Publishing & Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC).

Salary & Benefits: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Preferred appointment level is $46,164 – $82,524 (Assistant I – Librarian III). Consideration will be given to applicants with a wide range of years of experience, including qualified early career librarians.
