The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Library
and Informatics Center (UNM HSLIC) invites applications for the
position of Director of Library and Education Services. This position
is a senior leadership opportunity to provide vision and strategic
leadership for a complex and dynamic health sciences library and
leading-edge learning support unit in an academic health sciences
center. The position is responsible for implementing a mission-centered
program that provides education development and library services,
one of three programs in the Health Sciences Library and Informatics
Center. The position requires a service-oriented leader who is organized
and articulate, who can build an inter-disciplinary team environment,
is fearless in advancing the digital library of the future, a vocal
advocate for the role of the librarian in the education, research,
and clinical enterprises, and can lead in a transformative way.
Mentors ten HSLIC faculty members in HSLIC-focused service, evaluation,
research, and technology initiatives.
Summary: The Director of Library and Education Services
oversees a program that includes reference and user support, resource
access and delivery, special collections (including the Hall of
Discovery and the Sculpture Garden of Healing), distance services
(including Native health information services), and the Learning
Design Center that supports online course delivery for the Health
Sciences Center (HSC). This position also oversees programmatic
support, including scheduling functions, for the Domenici Center
for Health Sciences Education; digital content development and conserving;
the provision of distance services and outreach programs to both
affiliated and unaffiliated users who are physically distant from
the UNM Health Sciences Center in Albuquerque; and HSLIC's resource
library contract through the National Network of Libraries of Medicine®.
The Director reports to the Associate Vice President
for Knowledge Management and IT (who
also serves as HSC CIO and UNM Deputy CIO) and works collaboratively
with respective Directors for Technology Support and for Health
Sciences Informatics Development. In addition to the above, duties
include those expected of all SOM and HSLIC faculty, including teaching,
committee service, strategic planning team work, contributing to
information and reference services, and scholarly activities. Faculty
appointment is in the School of Medicine (SOM); salary, rank and
track will be based on the credentials of the incumbent. Salary
range: $90,000 - 100,000 based upon qualifications.
Duties and Responsibilities:
" Provides vision and strategic leadership, library assessment
and evaluation, and budget oversight for Library and Education Services
within the Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center.
" Administers programs that transform the library and its faculty
for the future, especially in the use of technology, as well as
initiatives that advance changes in scholarly communications.
" Oversees work as the resource library for the State of New
Mexico through the National Network of Libraries of Medicine®
and for associated programs, such as the New Mexico Health Connection
(Go Local), the NM Regional Advisory Committee, and cross-regional
collaborations.
" Supervises coordinators and managers for Reference and User
Support, Resource Access & Delivery, Special Collections, Distance
Services, and the Learning Design Center.
" Markets HSLIC to internal and external constituencies through
presentations as well as overseeing the departmental liaison program
and the development of promotional materials, including the annual
report.
" Serves as a role model for the HSLIC single service point.
" Represents HSLIC in its partnerships with AAHSL (including
annual survey administration), SCAMeL directors, Four Corners Consortium,
and other library/education associations.
Qualifications:
Required/Minimum:
" Graduate degree in library or information science from an
American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution
" Credentialing in the Association of Health Information Professionals
(AHIP)
" Five plus years of experience with demonstrated increasing
professional responsibility in a leading edge health sciences library
or higher education library in the sciences
" Strong supervisory experience with increasing numbers of
direct reports (faculty and staff)
Preferred:
" Additional masters or doctoral degree in relevant discipline,
especially education, business, or public health.
" Experience with increasingly responsible administrative duties,
including managing large budgets; and in the creative use of computer
and communications technologies, particularly in the delivery of
education and training.
" Experience working as a team member in a complex, diverse,
service-oriented environment.
" Demonstrated outcomes relevant to functioning as a faculty
member in the areas of teaching, scholarship (publications or presentations),
and research (proposal development and implementation, grant or
contract funding).
" Experience in literature searching and delivery of training
using online databases, particularly PubMed and other National Library
of Medicine products.
" Excellent written communication skills as demonstrated in
the required writing sample.
Institutional Information:
Located in Albuquerque, the largest city in New Mexico, The University
of New Mexico Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center (HSLIC)
serves the School of Medicine, undergraduate and graduate programs
in the Colleges of Nursing and Pharmacy, seven allied health programs,
a graduate program of biomedical sciences, a Masters in Public Health
Program and a university teaching hospital. Problem-based learning
and evidence-based practice are strong cultures within the HSC.
HSLIC is responsible for the Health Sciences Center website, email,
network, file servers, and user support as well as being the center
for web-based health sciences education for the University, has
a small informatics training program, and is nationally known for
its Native American Health Information Services. UNM has a high
performance computing center, biocomputing division, UNM-owned public
radio and television stations; and offers opportunities for partnerships
with main campus University Libraries and the Law Library.
