Reference number 21128, The Head of Public Services Librarian
reports directly to the Dean of Library Services. Twelve month
tenure-track administrative faculty position. The principal role
of the Head of Public Services is to manage all functions of the
public services areas of the library: Reference Services, Instruction,
User Services, and Outreach. This position requires a team leadership
style that remains immersed in the day-to-day functions and concerns
of the Public Services Department. Administrative obligations
include hiring, training, and promotion of library public service
faculty and staff. As a member of the librarys management
team, the Head of Public Services, participates in policy formulation
and takes a prominent role in strategic planning. Duties: Ensures
that library service points are adequately monitored and staffed
with an appropriate number of qualified personnel. Promotes a
positive image of the Houston Cole Library. Ensures a service-oriented
atmosphere in service areas of the library. Stays abreast of current
library public service trends and utilizes such knowledge to enhance
the Public Services Department. Participates in the development
and review of the policies and procedures of the librarys
public service areas as well as the library as a whole. Serves
on library and campus committees. As a member of the library faculty
will pursue an active and ongoing program of professional development,
research, and service appropriate for his/her rank at the university.
Agrees to participate in extracurricular activities as requested
by the dean. Qualifications: MLS or MLIS from an ALA accredited
institution, or equivalent required. Three or more years of current
and progressively responsible library public services experience
within a comprehensive higher education academic setting required.
Record of publications required. Experience coordinating one of
the following library public service areas: circulation, reference,

role of the Head of Technical Services is the overall management,
operation, long range planning, policy and procedure development,
and documentation of the following services: bibliographic verification,
binding, acquisitions, physical processing, cataloging, serial
and government documents, and automated services. This position
requires a team leadership style that remains immersed in the
day-to-day functions and concerns of the Technical Services Department.
Administrative obligations include hiring, training, and promotion
of library technical service faculty and staff. As a member of
the librarys management team, the Head of Technical Services,
participates in policy formulation and takes a prominent role
in strategic planning. Duties: Selects, trains and evaluates faculty
and staff, provides leadership and support to faculty in the department;
facilitates communication within the department and between technical
services and public service. Works to resolve system-related service
issues, coordinating problem resolution as needed with various
groups that may include users, library staff in functional areas,
and information technology staff. Assists in researching and developing
new technology proposals and managing systems-related projects.
Coordinates the creation of repositories for a variety of metadata
formats and digital objects. Serves on library and campus committees.
As a member of the library faculty will pursue an active and ongoing
program of professional development, research, and service appropriate
for his/her rank at the university. Agrees to participate in extracurricular

services experience within an academic setting required, knowledge

changes as needed, ability to meet academic promotion requirements.
