Harvard University Library is seeking a Systems Administrator IV to join the Office for Information Systems Department!


Overview:
The Harvard University Library (HUL) is one of the greatest research libraries of the world and is committed to maintaining its excellence in the digital era. The Office for Information Systems (OIS) is devoted to developing, implementing and maintaining innovative and stable systems that support the academic and research mission of the University by providing integrated and coherent access to research materials and resources. To achieve its mission, OIS collaborates with a wide variety of Harvard staff and committees including librarians, curators, and instructional technology staff on innovative projects and strategic initiatives that aim to integrate technology services and digital catalogs and content into the fabric of the university.

Systems Administrator IV Duties and Responsibilities:
The Systems Operations team is responsible for the development and support of complex high availability Oracle & UNIX, web-based library applications. As a senior member of the Systems Operations team and reporting to the Manager of Production Operations, the System Administrator will work collaboratively with experienced programmers, analysts, systems librarians, vendors, central university IT staff and other system administrators to provide stable applications for the Harvard libraries. Incumbent will maintain the hardware and software infrastructure in our UNIX environment including managing a large capacity SAN storage/tape environment, recommending hardware purchases, installing and patching operating systems, diagnosing and troubleshooting system problems, and consulting with developers and application support for infrastructure best practices. Library Systems include a client/server library management system, on-line public catalogs, preservation and access Digital Repository, and a growing suite of digital library applications.

Major duties and responsibilities include: Maintain hardware and system software for a large digital archive with disk and tape storage, projected to grow to over 250TB. Specify, recommend, install, configure, and maintain hardware (servers, disk arrays, etc).Serve as a lead systems admin. for identifying problems as well as driving resolution with University network and systems operations center staff. Install and configure server and operating systems and related layered software, ensuring standards and procedures are maintained. Troubleshoot production systems to keep library systems reliable and secure. Provide system recommendations for high-availability, backup, and disaster recovery planning and implementation. Provide consultation with application developers on hardware and software decisions. Diagnose and troubleshoot system and network problems. Maintain system security, including firewalls (router ACLs) and host-based defenses. Develop and serve as mentor to less experienced staff. Please Note: Expected to provide off-hours support as part of an on-call rotation.

Education and Job Requirements:
Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or multiple years of relevant work experience is required with at least 6 years' progressively responsible professional level experience as a UNIX system administrator.
Expert Unix skills: Solaris and Linux.
Experience with TCP/IP, HTTP,DNS, Apache HTTP server and NFS.
Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment and to solve problems quickly.
Strong verbal and written communications skills required.
Additional Qualifications:
Knowledge of large-scale storage systems, especially SAM/QFS as well as. knowledge of Suns SAM/QFS product, highly desirable.
