Dean of the Library




California State University San Marcos seeks an exceptional, visionary and resourceful individual with the qualifications and experience to serve as its Dean of the Library. The Dean will provide the leadership to further the role of the Library as a core component of the University's academic mission. As part of a comprehensive university the Dean will lead the Library in its support of the academic development of students into life-long learners, where students are active participants in the learning process. The Dean of the Library is responsible for leadership, strategic planning, and management within the Library, and fosters collaboration and the creation of knowledge within the University community.

The Dean reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and serves on the Academic Affairs Leadership Council, an advisory body to the Provost that makes recommendations regarding division-wide strategic planning, budget, and policies and procedures. The Dean also serves on the President's Cabinet and on the California State University system-wide Council of Library Directors. The Dean leads a library faculty and staff of 44 and manages a budget of approximately $3.6 million. The Library Dean position is classified as Administrator IV in the California State University Management Personnel Plan (MPP) and serves at the pleasure of the President.

Requirements of the Position:

ALA accredited master's degree or its equivalent.

Strong record of educational and scholarly achievement.

Strong record of progressively responsible administrative work in a university library setting.

Strong record of progressively responsible engagement in a professional association.

The successful candidate must demonstrate leadership in managing library programs, have a record of identifying and solving problems creatively, and function effectively as part of a leadership team. In addition the Dean will:


Possess appreciation for the mission and vision of The California State University system and for the California State University San Marcos campus as comprehensive educational institutions;


Possess knowledge and understanding of emerging trends in higher education and in university libraries;


Have highly developed financial, strategic planning, and assessment skills; possess strong analytical skills and the ability to evaluate and utilize data in planning and decision making;


Demonstrate strong, successful leadership and team-building skills, with a proven ability to plan for and manage change;


Have substantial experience in planning, budgeting, management, and evaluation of programs and personnel;


Demonstrate proven ability to lead the library faculty and staff in developing and enhancing innovative library programs;


Support professional development and tenure and promotion processes;


Be able to work effectively with diverse populations and have a strong commitment to access in library programs;


Possess the sincerity, integrity, sound judgment, inclusive management and leadership style, and personal bearing that engenders wide-spread credibility and trust;


Be able to effectively listen to and communicate with all constituents in- and outside the library, campus and community;


Build effective strategic alliances internally and externally;


Be an effective advocate for student learning.
