Development of new staff tools to enhance productivity Explore opportunities for innovation through experimentation with various forms of metadata and open source software.
Work with ERDM units to develop new software interfaces that utilize Aleph and SFX APIs to gather, present, and update administrative and bibliographic data.
Develop and maintain scripts that enable efficient updating and synchronization of vital administrative and bibliographic data, especially Link Resolver data.
Develop and maintain server-based solutions that enable batch updates to Aleph bibliographic, holdings, and URL data.
Develop and maintain Aleph server-based fix routines and templates to provide efficiencies in manual database management procedures.
Advise the Macro Express coordinator and liaisons on macro development and maintenance.
Data load implementation and development Work collaboratively with the Head of the Electronic Cataloging Unit and another Data Loads & Development programmer to pre-process, load, and perform batch maintenance on vendor-provided bibliographic metadata.
Process unique, project-based batch data loads based on specifications defined by catalogers in consultation with selectors.
Collaborate with Systems staff to provide programming and server administration support related specifically to bibliographic data.
Automated bibliographic record enhancement Manage and further develop the Z39.50-based automated enhancement of minimal level records for electronic and print resources in Aleph.
Produce reports on the effectiveness of the automated process and the characteristics of the bibliographic records.
Related duties Perform additional duties as assigned, including participation on library-wide groups.
Education and Experience Required BS/BA degree, preferably in computer science. Knowledge and demonstrated application of programming skills in a prominent language (Perl, PHP, C++, Java, etc.). Experience working with bibliographic metadata in MARC and/or XML. Experience working with XML, Z39.50, SRU/W and/or other comparable data management and communication tools. Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and to apply knowledge to real situations. Demonstrated strong analytical skills, aptitude for details, and ability to apply complex rules correctly in a variety of circumstances. Demonstrated good English oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and within a team setting. Ability to establish measurable goals and objectives and to implement strategies to achieve them. Flexibility in working on multiple priorities and projects simultaneously. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a multicultural/collaborative environment.
Desired Experience with an integrated library system (Aleph 500 preferred). MLS degree or an equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience. Knowledge of acquisitions and cataloging processes in a large academic library. Experience with OpenURL link resolvers (e.g., SFX) and/or electronic resource management systems. Experience with Oracle relational databases. Experience with Macro Express or other Windows macro programs.
