Organizational Context:
The Harvard University Library is the system of more than 70 libraries with over 16 million volumes that provides comprehensive access to Harvard's library holdings across the boundaries of individual faculties and disciplines. The Harvard University Library is also a department of the University's central administration. Known as HUL, the department develops and manages a range of University-wide library programs that reflect its charge to coordinate the University's many libraries as a system that supports teaching and research; manage the Library's infrastructure for digital holdings and traditional collections; and ensure the Harvard Library's position as a premier research institution.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Deputy Director of the Harvard University Library is responsible for the administration of the Harvard University Library (HUL), a department of the University's Central Administration. The Deputy Director oversees the heads of HUL's programs and administrative services. HUL's major programs are the Harvard Depository, the Harvard University Archives (both collections and records management services), the Office for Information Systems (including the Library Digital Initiative), the Open Collections Program, and the Weissman Preservation Center.

Reporting to the Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor and Director of the University Library, the Deputy Director advises and supports University Library Director in overseeing the evolution of library services across the University. The Deputy Director actively collaborates with senior administrators throughout the Harvard libraries to coordinate the programs of the libraries and to ensure appropriate, seamless, and effective service. The Deputy Director works to establish library-wide policies, to coordinate library activities, and to develop new central programs and services that enable the libraries to fulfill the mission of their schools and of the University overall. The Deputy Director also serves as a member of the University Library Council and its sub-committees, and represents the University Library Director and HUL in University-wide administrative venues and meetings.

The Harvard University Library has a staff of 130 and an annual budget of $20 million.

The Deputy Director directs and implements the full organization in strategic planning, the budgeting process, and human resources management. Develops budgets and long-term fiscal planning, including debt management and fiscal monitoring, of more than $20 million in annual budgets.

The Deputy Director provides intellectual and programmatic leadership for:

- Harvard Depository: Ensures effective, efficient, and cost-sensitive high-density storage to the libraries, archives, and offices of the University. Stewards the interests of both the University's libraries through the Harvard Depository Standing Committee and its primary constituents.

- Harvard University Archives: Ensures the effective implementation of the Archives' mission to steward the University's records and historical collections for services to a large public audience, as well as to the University's scholars, students, researchers, and administration.

-Office of Information Systems: Ensures the effective support and operation for HUL's portfolio of library systems as well as the promotion and implementation of new information technologies, initiatives and services.

-Open Collections Program: Oversees Harvard's Open Collections Program, which creates subject-specific, online library collections, open to anyone with an Internet connection, that can support teaching and learning around the world.

-Weissman Preservation Center: Supports the management and implementation of programs and projects dedicated to assessing, preserving, and making accessible the special collections, in all formats, of the Harvard University Library.

In addition, the Deputy Director works closely with the Office for Scholarly Communication, headed by a senior faculty member reporting directly to the University Library Director, to ensure this program's integration into HUL.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
As HUL's chief operating officer, the Deputy Director provides direction and oversight of:
Administrative Services:
HUL's administrative services include development, financial management, human resources, physical plant and emergency management, publications and communications, and sponsored and capital projects.

Institutional Research:
Manages the collection of longitudinal data, as well as reporting and analyzing for the Association of Research Libraries reports, the HUL Annual Report, the University's Fact Book, as required. Provides information for the Library Director, ULC and the Central Administration.

Basic Qualifications:
" Master's degree in library/information science required with at least 10-15 years of broad-based management experience in an academic research library.
" Minimum of 5 years of experience working at a senior administrative level. Demonstrated understanding of the mission and operations of research libraries and special collections, and extensive knowledge of new library/information technologies.
" Proven success in managing staff of varying levels and record of promoting organizational excellence.
" Solid expertise in budgeting, financial management, and resource allocation.
" Strong diplomatic skills, excellent judgment, and high level of professionalism.
" Demonstrated enthusiasm for the mission of the enterprise and commitment to working collaboratively across libraries and functions.
" Excellent analytic, written, and communication skills.

Additional Qualifications:
" Thorough knowledge of Harvard's complex library system as well as University administrative units and policy preferred.
