Under the direction of the Associate University Librarian for Collection Development, the Head of the Map and Imagery Laboratory (MIL) is responsible for the organization, administration, and management of the department. The department has a staff of 4.5 fte and numerous student assistants. Grants, internships, and external business partners fund additional departmental support. The Head of MIL is responsible for strategic planning and development,
providing leadership for digital project development to enhance
and promote the use and access to the librarys vast collections.
Responsible for all aspects of collection management and development
for cartographic resources and imagery. Supervises cataloging,
metadata creation and classification of maps, geospatial databases,
and remote-sensing images. Assists and advises in the design of
bibliographic and administrative databases in support of MIL operations.
*Required* - ALA accredited MLS. Strong knowledge of cartographic
and geospatial resources including maps, remote-sensing images,
and aerial photos in both hard copy and digital form. Demonstrated
experience in planning for and implementing digitization of cartographic
resources. *Preferred* - Advanced degree and /or training in cartography,
Geography or related field. Experience creating metadata and working
with metadata software (e.g. CONTENTdm; MSAccess, php, MySQL).
Experience using standard cataloging tools (AACR most current
edition; MARC 21).
Located in the Davidson Library , the Map and Imagery Laboratory
(MIL) houses extensive collections of maps and aerial photos,
including 6 million hard copy items and 1.2 million digital items.
The Laboratory is nationally recognized for the quantity of geospatial
data it holds and the availability of equipment for utilizing
both analog and digital materials. The Laboratory provides technologies
for integrating diverse information formats. It is the home of
the Alexandria Digital Library The UCSB library is committed to the pursuit of excellence, diversity,
