The UCSB Library is seeking an energetic and innovative librarian who will work proactively and collaboratively to advance the services and resources of the Library’s nationally recognized Map and Imagery Department’s print and digital resources. Key to this position will be the initiative to continue developing cartographic resources and databases for advanced research through collaboration with faculty and other libraries with map and geospatial collections.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction of the Associate University Librarian for Collection Development, the Head of the Map and Imagery Laboratory (MIL) is responsible for the organization, administration, and management of the department. The department has a staff of 4.5 fte and numerous student assistants. Grants, internships, and external business partners fund additional departmental support.

The Head of MIL is responsible for strategic planning and development, providing leadership for digital project development to enhance and promote the use and access to the library’s vast collections.
Collaborates with faculty to develop cartographic research resources and expand partnerships on campus. Collaborates with other libraries within UC and nationally to develop cartographic resources and databases.
Serves as the library’s liaison and expert on topics and issues relating to maps and cartographic services.

Responsible for all aspects of collection management and development for cartographic resources and imagery. Supervises cataloging, metadata creation and classification of maps, geospatial databases, and remote-sensing images. Assists and advises in the design of bibliographic and administrative databases in support of MIL operations.
Oversees preservation and maintenance of map and cartographic materials collections. Supervises reference service and instruction relating to MIL resources, and provides in-depth reference. Administers the department’s external partnerships with computer searching services.
Performs outreach activities to promote MIL services.

QUALIFICATIONS:

*Required* - – ALA accredited MLS. Strong knowledge of cartographic and geospatial resources including maps, remote-sensing images, and aerial photos in both hard copy and digital form. Demonstrated experience in planning for and implementing digitization of cartographic resources.
Experience in reference and collection management of cartographic resources collections in multiple formats. Demonstrated expertise working with digital geospatial data. Supervisory or project management experience and excellent managerial skills. Ability to work collaboratively with faculty on advanced research projects. Strong commitment to excellence in public service. Demonstrated initiative and flexibility. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. Knowledgeable about current and emerging trends and technologies in cartographic resources.

*Preferred* - Advanced degree and /or training in cartography, Geography or related field. Experience creating metadata and working with metadata software (e.g. CONTENTdm; MSAccess, php, MySQL). Experience using standard cataloging tools (AACR most current edition; MARC 21).
Experience with UNIX command line skills, Adobe Photoshop; ESRI GIS software;, Webpage work (MTML). Experience in proposal writing and grant management.

ENVIRONMENT:

Located in the Davidson Library , the Map and Imagery Laboratory (MIL) houses extensive collections of maps and aerial photos, including 6 million hard copy items and 1.2 million digital items. The Laboratory is nationally recognized for the quantity of geospatial data it holds and the availability of equipment for utilizing both analog and digital materials. The Laboratory provides technologies for integrating diverse information formats. It is the home of the Alexandria Digital Library
(ADL) providing Internet geospatial searching as well as data access.
The Map and Imagery Lab (MIL) serves the academic and research needs of the University of California , the state university system, the business community, federal and state government, and other domestic and foreign educational institutions.
