📚Asian Pop Culture Takes Over American Libraries

by Maria Shackles

Public libraries are embracing the vibrant world of Asian pop culture—and patrons are loving it! From fuzzy monsters to K-pop heroes, these programs are drawing patrons of all ages.

đŸŸ Labubu Mania

Labubu, the mischievous-looking character created by Chinese artist Kasing Lung, is popping up in libraries from coast to coast. Originally featured in Lung’s 2015 picture book series The Monsters, Labubus are now beloved collectibles thanks to a 2023 collaboration with Chinese toy company POP MART.

Libraries are getting creative with Labubu-themed events:

“Labubus are like the beanie baby of my generation. Adults love the capsule and blind box toys just as much as kids.” — Beth Kirchenberg, Glen Ellyn Public Library

đŸŽ€ KPop Demon Hunters: Enjoying a “Golden” Moment

The Netflix sensation KPop Demon Hunters is also making waves. Libraries are having themed sing-alongs, booklists and more:

“Pokemon and Naruto have been around for a long time, but K-Pop Demon Hunters brought K-Pop and Asian pop culture to a wider audience.” — Beth Kirchenberg, Glen Ellyn Public Library

đŸ± More Ways Libraries Celebrate Asian Pop Culture

Before Labubu and K-pop, libraries have consistently offered other Asian-inspired programs:

  • Anime clubs
  • Candy sushi crafts
  • Asian snack taste tests with subscription boxes like Universal Yums
