On January 30, APALA Northeast Chapter members visited New York Public Library’s (NYPL) Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. NYPL librarians Zulay Chang, Jo-Ann Wong, and Hee- Gwone Yoo shared select AANHPI-related materials from the Photography, Map, and General Research collections. In the afternoon, Philip Mui led us on a tour of the library’s Milstein Research Stacks, two levels of underground collections storage located beneath Bryant Park. We are grateful to Zulay Chang, Cecelia Fiering, Jeanie Pai, and Jo-Ann Wong for planning and hosting this special visit. Read more about the APALA NE Chapter NYPL visit here.
On February 16, we marched in the Lunar New Year Parade in Manhattan’s Chinatown with members, friends, and allies of New York Public Library’s (NYPL) staff, NYPL’s AANHPI Employee Resource Group, and the CALA Northeast Chapter. During the parade route, we distributed stickers and other giveaways, including bookmarks featuring recommended titles by AANHPI authors. Special thanks to Cecelia Fiering, Jeanie Pai, Sunny Chung, and Natalie Lau for their help with coordinating the all-day celebration.
On March 7, chapter members joined colleagues from BCALA, CALA, and REFORMA Northeast Chapters on a special visit to the Morgan Library & Museum. We were led on a tour of Belle da Costa Greene: A Librarian’s Legacy exhibit by Philip Palmer, Robert H. Taylor Curator and Department Head of Literary and Historical Manuscripts.
Big thanks to Elizabeth Joseph and Jennifer Embree for planning and coordinating our chapter’s lunchtime book discussion series. These quarterly book club meetings aim to re-energize the legacy of APALA Literature Award winners and honorees. On March 25, we held our inaugural meeting and discussed A History of Burning written by Janika Oza. Our next scheduled meetings are June 10 (American Fever by Dur E Aziz Amna), September 16 (Afterparties by Anthony Veasna So), and December 16 (How Much of These Hills is Gold written by C Pam Zhang).
The chapter currently has 63 members. In July 2025, we welcome Rebecca Martin and Michelle Lee as the new chapter co-chairs.
