Your name, pronouns, current or most recent work place and position, and a little bit about the path that’s taken you to where you are. (i.e. Where else have you worked? How have you been able to grow professionally?)
Maria Shackles (she/her), Glen Ellyn Public Library, Youth Department Director. I worked as a Youth Librarian for 10 years and became a Branch Manager in 2014. In that role, I eventually oversaw Youth Services for our 8-branch system.
After living on the West Coast for almost 17 years, I recently moved back to the Midwest to be closer to family, and pursue my dream job. I got my start as a Youth Services librarian in the Chicago suburbs, and now I’m back as a Youth Department Director, a full-circle moment.
How long have you been an APALA member? Why have you continued to be an APALA member?
I’ve been a member since 2009. I continue to be involved in APALA because I believe in the mission, but really – it’s because of the people. I have found a network of like-minded library professionals who are smart, fun, welcoming, and generous.
What aspects of library work do you find most compelling? Has that changed since you entered the field?
Childhood is such a magical time. To bring stories to life, and be part of a young child’s life as a trusted adult is a special thing. I also love that kids and families seek out the library as a place to hang, play games, work, and be together.
It’s not as much about the books now, as it is about all the other things we provide: the safe space, the relationships, the resources, the quality events. We are a treasured community hub.
If you could go back in time a few years ago, to when you participated in the Member Highlights series, what would you tell your past self?
Change is hard, but you get to write your own story.
What’s next for you? If you’ve got a big move, publication, webinar, conference presentation, or social media presence that you’d like APALA members to know about, let us know here!
I’m excited to be part of the Executive Board as a Member-at-Large through 2027, and am looking forward to giving back and having an insider view of the organization.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Try volunteering for a committee! APALA makes it easy. You’ll make new friends, and gain valuable experience.
